The company

Trotman Publishing is an independent educational publisher of books and digital resources in the careers sector with a long-established list and pedigree. It specialises in content for the secondary school and careers markets, publishing a range of market-leading print and eBooks. Trotman (trotman.co.uk) publishes around 30 new titles a year and has around 60 titles in print, including the bestselling HEAP: University Degree Course Offers, now in its 56th edition, and the annual Careers directory, now in its 22nd edition. In 2024 we launched a publishing partnership with the Careers Development Institute (CDI) and in 2026 we will launch a new series in SEND. Other bestselling titles include The Careers Leader Handbook, the definitive guidebook for careers leaders in the UK.

The role

The Sales and Marketing Executive is responsible for supporting the Sales and Marketing Manager to drive sales growth and expand market share within our specialised sectors. The role involves creating marketing materials and resources, delivering marketing campaigns, managing the website, social media channels and reports, organizing events, assisting with the management of key accounts and customers, handling customer queries, and managing stock levels. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in publishing, ideally within the educational, academic, or professional markets, and possess excellent communication, customer service and analytical skills. They will have at least one year’s experience in a sales or marketing role and will need to be proactive and able to work remotely. The role would particularly suit someone currently working in an assistant level role looking for the next step in their career.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Developing and executing marketing campaigns (including working with authors).
  • Creating marketing materials such as AIs, email newsletters, blog content, and flyers.
  • Writing copy for, maintaining and updating the company websites.
  • Developing online resources to complement our print and digital products.
  • Working with bloggers and influencers to generate reviews.
  • Creating engaging social media content, scheduling posts, and analysing engagement metrics.
  • Organising and promoting online and in-person events.
  • Tracking and reporting on marketing performance, ROI and goals.
  • Liaising with key trade accounts, partners and customers.
  • Handling customer queries and providing sales assistance and customer service.
  • Managing customer orders and inventory, preparing reports, and maintaining databases.
  • Identifying and qualifying potential customer needs and requirements to support product development and sales.

The candidate

The ideal candidate will be a customer-focused individual who learns quickly and can understand and respond to customer needs. They will be creative and innovative in their approach, a self-starter who is happy to work both autonomously and collaboratively as part of a busy team. They will have excellent attention to detail and will need to be comfortable communicating with customers in person and by phone.

Skills and experience required

Essential

  • 1-2 years’ experience in a sales or marketing role
  • Experience in email marketing and running social media accounts
  • Experience in managing website content
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven ability to prioritise tasks and work well under pressure
  • An eye for detail and strong copywriting skills
  • Flexibility, being happy to work in a small team across a range of tasks
  • An ability to manage their own time
  • Good MS Office skills, in particular Word and Excel
  • Experience using design services e.g. Canva or Adobe Photoshop
  • Excellent organisation and administrative skills
  • Ability to adapt quickly and work proactively

Desirable

  • Experience in customer service

  • Familiarity with the UK publishing industry
  • Budgetary and financial understanding
