Key Reviews

'This book is beautifully clear, accessible and enthusiastic. It will be genuinely helpful to teachers, parents and students in a myriad of ways.'

Dr Heather Earnshaw, Lecturer in Teacher Education (Physics), Edinburgh Napier University

'So often, we see job profiles or sector overviews presented as stand-alone information - what makes STEM Careers such a valuable resource for careers professionals, young people, educators and parents/carers is the way in which the author threads big picture thinking throughout the book, highlighting the interconnectedness of different STEM industries, skills and global/local problems that have a link to STEM careers and STEM solutions. This approach, supported by the authentic 'career story' case studies and helpful breakdown of STEM-related sectors and job titles into easy-to-digest categories (Making Things, Helping Others etc.) grounds the book as a really practical tool for career explorers, and one with an emphasis on both broadening horizons (see the references to STEAM and the creative industries, so often neglected in STEM-related conversations) and drilling into the detail of what STEM careers really look like in practice.'

Chris Webb RCDP, Career Consultant, Co-Host of the #WeAreCareers show and author of #TheWeekInCareers

An easy to read book about STEM Careers suitable for students, parents, and teachers.

A rewarding and interesting guide to STEM careers and how they can be found in most careers. It is well written and at a suitable level for the age group it is written for.

I enjoyed the Career Stories from a wide range of people, the Fascinating Facts covered different areas and was enlightening. The Reflection Sections at the end of each chapter was useful and will help students to decide on their future career.

I found the web links included in the chapters very useful and have used a few already. It is easy to dip into, but also easy to read from front to back. I found the referencing to other chapters really helpful especially if you are dipping into a particular topic. The comparison of Qualifications between the different home nations was very informative.

This book has improved my knowledge of STEM Careers and provided lots of web links that I will be using with my students.

A detailed, clear guide for everyone

This is a well written and comprehensive guide to planning for and getting your STEM career on the right track- from school age decision-making onwards,.

It gives alternative routes and encourages broad thinking as some readers may not have had careers help before or be in two minds.

It also mentions STEAM, relates the creative with the scientific/ technical, and explains skills and values - as I would expect from a Careers expert!

I loved the clear explanations given by the author- not assuming knowledge of terminology, and the chapter summarising neatly how to prepare and plan for a STEM career, generally.

I would have liked more diagrams or illustrations to show cross-over career areas and relationships between STEM careers.
The A-Z of additional careers ideas at the back is excellent, to open student vistas. The parent and teacher chapters were useful, concise, and thoughtful too.

Overall this is a very useful , up to date, and valuable guide.

STEM Handbook for Careers

This is a great easy to read and use publication. What I particularly liked was the ability to dip in and out depending on the STEM career that you are seeking. You can navigate students towards specific chapters to read rather than having to trawl through endless websites. There are over 100 STEM related jobs covered in the book, career stories from contributors in those roles which really helps students to visualise themselves in that industry or job. The hero in STEM highlights such as Sir James Dyson and Dame Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock are a personal favourite. The individual chapters cover the different sectors, skills, personal qualities and qualifications required for a career in STEM and a chapter dedicated to parents and carers as well as teachers. A great book with something for everyone.
