Independent peer review is an integral part of the quality assurance process for all volumes published in this series. It helps ensure that proposed and completed manuscripts meet appropriate standards of scholarly rigour, originality, accuracy and contribution to their field.
All proposals and full manuscripts undergo independent peer review, supported by editorial assessment at both stages. This process enables us to assess the academic merit of proposed
volumes before commissioning and to evaluate the quality of the completed work before publication.
The precise focus of a review will vary according to the discipline, subject matter and form of the proposed or completed work. Reviewers are therefore asked to apply appropriate standards for the field while considering the scholarly quality, integrity and contribution of the work as a whole.
How our independent peer review process works
Who conducts the peer reviews?
Reviewers are independent academics with appropriate subject expertise relevant to the topic of the book. We adopt a single anonymous peer review process, with reviewers aware of the authors and their track record as part of the assessment of the viability of the book. We try to avoid reviewers with a close connection to the proposed book or its authors, or who have written a competing book. Reviewers have the right to remain anonymous, but are free to share their review with the author independently if they choose to do so. This allows for robust decision making, but also allows authors to ask further questions if the book is recommended for publication.
